Recently, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) dedicated a feature article on its official website and in its publication MeteoWorld(Issue 1, 2026), spotlighting Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology's (NUIST) innovative practices and outstanding contributions in the field of international meteorological talent cultivation. Titled "Cultivating the next generation of meteorological professionals," the report highly commends the remarkable achievements made by NUIST in global meteorological capacity building, particularly in fostering talent development for developing countries.
WMO gives high recognition to NUIST's unique model for cultivating international talents. Leveraging its disciplinary strengths and international cooperation networks, the university has established a training system that synergistically advances "degree education" and "professional training," precisely aligning with cutting-edge operational needs worldwide. The aim is to forge inter-disciplinary meteorological talents with strong scientific literacy, solid practical skills, and a broad international perspective. The report specifically highlights NUIST's fruitful outcomes in serving capacity building in developing countries. By integrating long-term degree education with short-term specialized training, the university has cultivated a large number of key professionals for various countries. Many of them have now grown into core managers within the meteorological sectors of their home nations. Their career development trajectories serve as the best testament to the quality of NUIST's international meteorological talent cultivation, fully demonstrating the global responsibility of NUIST's first-class disciplines.
Since the establishment of the WMO Regional Training Centre at the university in 1993, NUIST has trained over 8,000 senior meteorological professionals globally. Among them, 14 individuals have assumed important positions as Directors of their National Meteorological and Hydrological Services or as Permanent Representatives with WMO. Furthermore, through its role as the China node of the WMO's "Global Campus," the university provides ongoing meteorological education and training services to 160 countries and regions worldwide.
Taking this opportunity, the university will continue to deepen international cooperation and expand its global presence. It aims to contribute to building a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable ecosystem for the development of international meteorological professionals, and to persistently provide wisdom and strength from China in addressing increasingly complex climate change challenges and fostering a global community of shared future.
